Gone are the days of grandad’s or grandma’s pension. What use to be a comforting contract between employers and employees for life after work, has now—in most cases—become a less than successful plan for retirement. That’s where Social Security (SS) comes in. Yes, SS exists to supplement income after retiring, but if the plan for collecting isn’t setup correctly thousands of your hard earned retirement dollars could be lost.

This week on the David Lukas Show, Little Rock’s own David Lukas discusses the top 10 most frequently asked questions about Social Security posed to him during David Lukas Financial’s  Maximizing Social Security courses held in 2017.

The 10 most frequently asked questions about Social Security addressed on today’s show:

  1. When am I eligible to receive Social Security benefits?
  2. Is SS in trouble? Will it be around when I need it?
  3. What happens if I claim Social Security but continue to work?
  4. How is eligibility determined?
  5. When is the best time to claim SS? Could I claim other benefits?
  6. How much will I be taxed?
  7. What happens if my spouse dies (what are survivor benefits)?
  8. What if I’m divorced?
  9. Why can’t I get any reliable advice from the SS administration/department?

Do you remember what started the financial crisis of 2008? Did you foresee what would eventually happen to the stock and housing market? Do you remember how much you—everyone you know lost? If a major market correction were to happen again, soon, are you protected?

The early 2000s were a time of prosperity. In a seemingly unstoppable economy millions of Americans were reaping the rewards of a stock market that had never performed better. Little did they know that soon 18.9 trillion dollars in household wealth would be lost. Never had they imagined that close to eight million people would lose employment. How many dreaded heading back to work because they lost up to 60% of their retirement funds they’d worked an entire career for because of high investment risk?

This week, on the David Lukas Show, David addresses what happened in the financial world less than ten years ago and the damage it did to the American economy. Throughout the hour David names and expands upon several surprising lessons, from 2008, retirees and soon to be retirees have at their disposal to learn from. Because just having a plan isn’t enough. In fact, having a financial gameplan is the most important thing that you can do to secure your and your family's financial future.

Retirement is meant to be the period of calm after the rocky road of years of career(s) and earning. The actual act of retiring used to be fairly simple, back in the day. But now, future retirees NEED to know a multitude of things and require a specific gameplan to retire right—without penalty and most importantly WorryFree®.

This week on the David Lukas Show, our host David Lukas gives us listeners the ABCs of RMDs. Throughout the hour David explains what RMDs (Required Minimum Distributions) specifically are and why they are important to your overall retirement strategy.

Facts about RMDs discussed in today’s show:

  • What types of accounts are subject to required minimum distributions
  • How to delay an RMD if applicable
  • When the magical 10 year “penalty free” period of withdrawal starts  and ends for specific ages
  • How much must be taken out, specifically, per applicable account
  • How to prepare for paying taxes on your RMD(s)

What does the acronym ABC stand for?

A: is for the aggregation of each tax deferred account

B: is for beginning withdrawals

C: is for consider your taxes

You only get one chance at retiring. Whether you like it or not, you are indeed in the game of finance. The real trick is to play it smart so that you can enjoy retirement instead of spending your time worrying.  After spending most of your life working the last thing you want is to be full of life but potentially flat broke.

This week on the David Lukas Show, our host David Lukas talks about the five most common critical mistakes people make before and at the life changing event of retirement.

The top 5 mistakes mentioned:

  1. Not knowing how and when to claim Social Security
  2. Not having an estate plan
  3. Taking on more risk on investments than you know or need to
  4. Not having an insurance policy/contract  (annuity) in your retirement
  5. Not having a thoughtful diverse and comprehensive retirement plan

To hear all the excellent information that David Lukas of David Lukas Financial has about planning proactively for retirement, listen to the entire show today.

Q&A with David: Questions asked and  on today’s show.

Gentleman, Central Arkansas

My wife is 62 and is not working. She is eligible for her own benefits. I am 62 and I have no intention of claiming my benefits until the full retirement age (66). It seems like it would make sense for my wife to start claiming her benefits...then upon her full retirement age, claiming her spousal benefit based on the 50% of my full age retirement benefit. Is there any penalty for her claiming her benefits based on her work history now...then claiming her spousal benefits later?

Listen to David’s advice on this question today!

With no real help from the SS Administration itself, it’s hard to know what steps are necessary to take in maximizing your Social Security benefits. In fact, so many retirees assume that the process is easy. Unfortunately, it isn’t.

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about the many common assumptions people make or have already made about claiming Social Security. Throughout the hour, David talks through the 9 most common presumptions (listed below) that can impact your retirement and what you can do to prepare.

  1. Believing that Social Security is running out of money
  2. Thinking the money you pay into the system is the exact amount you’ll receive when collecting
  3. Assuming that SS is there to replace the entire income lost after retirement
  4. Believing that SS benefits (amount paid to you) are based, solely, on the last ten years of your income
  5. Mistakenly thinking that the retirement age of 65 is set in stone for everyone
  6. That the SS Admin will give you useful personalized advice
  7. Assuming that if you don’t claim your benefits as soon as you can (age 62) that you’ll collect less
  8. Not knowing the specifics about spousal benefits and the complications in collecting
  9. Not understanding eligible benefits before/after divorce

Many times, when it comes to investing, we tend to focus on the things we can’t control other than being proactive about what we can control. Human nature takes over and while it takes great amounts of time and energy to stress about the unpredictability of the stock market, the crippling price of healthcare, taxes, fees and rising costs of everyday living there are steps you can take to help you and your family live more and worry less.

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about five ways Savers can take control in regards to the ever changing environment of investing in the stock market.

Five topics discussed in today’s show:

First, be proactive and have a gameplan in place before collecting Social Security benefits. Maximizing your Social Security is and should be an integral part of your planning process. It can make or break your comfort in retirement.

Second, create a diversified income strategy with a well rounded portfolio.

Third, reduce expenses and fees. Keeping your costs/expenses down is key.

Fourth,  Plan for taxes after retirement, BEFORE you retire. Tax strategy is just smart planning.

Finally, make absolutely sure you aren’t taking on more risk than you are comfortable with.

We’ve all experienced the adage that “past performance is no true indication of future results.” Back in March of 2009 the market bottomed out and then it came roaring back setting record after record. But even with all this gain, many have lost thousands of dollars each year because they didn’t plan for their specific needs or they were taking more risk than they were comfortable with. So the question is, if you’re invested in the market, what do you do now? How much risk do you have to take?

This week, on The David Lukas Show, David talks about what options Savers, current investors, and potential investors have as far as the stock market is concerned. Throughout the hour, David names and defines the the most important things that retirees need to know about saving for retirement.

Topics discussed in today’s show aka, the...

5 pillars of investing that could impact your savings for retirement:

  1. Don't have unrealistic expectations about your investments or assume that the gains of the past will always reflect the same gains in the future
  2. Proactively plan for claiming your Social Security benefits correctly—this could save you thousands in lost income
  3. Have an income plan from diversified sources
  4. Ensure that your portfolio matches your tolerance for risk
  5. Have a strategy to protect yourself from healthcare and long term care costs

Female listener in Little Rock, AR asked:

My husband passed away in May of 2017. My Social Security survivor benefit from him would be about $1,500 a month. I’m 61 yrs old and earning about $38,200 a year. Am I entitled to any benefits while I work and earn this money? Social Security says no. What do you say?

Saving for retirement alone, just isn’t enough anymore. In today’s financial environment one must have a secure distinct plan to retire successfully. Because it isn’t what is happening, currently, but what happens in a down market that can have a profound effect over your savings for the next decade.

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks in depth about the common habits that prudent savers and successful retirees share in planning for retirement. These eight habits of successful retirees are:

1. Comprising a thoughtful and comprehensive game plan
2. Understanding of “risk tolerance” and knows exactly how much risk they are and are willing to take.
3. They have a plan in place that optimizes their social security benefits
4. They know how much they are paying in fees on their investments and how their advisors make their commissions
5. They are proactive in preparing for taxes (current and future) and and saving on taxes where and when they can
6. They have a diversified plan to generate income after retirement
7. They have a plan to protect them from both rising healthcare costs and the crippling expense of long-term care costs
8. They don’t have unrealistic expectations and live well within their means

Currently, fifty two million Americans have 4.4 trillion dollars socked away in their 401(k) savings accounts. Right now, in our current up market, everyone’s probably pretty happy with their performance. But what would happen to your 401(k), specifically, if the market took a turn for the worst? Do you know how much of your money is at risk? Are you willing to lose up to half of it? Did you know that ignoring your 401(k) could cost you a fortune?

This week on the David Lukas Show, David tackles the subject of security in your 401(k) retirement, or as he affectionately calls it your government sanctioned tax postponement plan, and what you can do to be proactively protective of your assets. Throughout the hour, David talks about the seven things that you can do to reboot your 401(k) and keep things on track.

Specific items touched upon in today’s show:

1. Figure out and know what your comfort level is with the investments you hold

2. Putting in too little? See if your employer has a true up provision program for your 401k program (The feature, called a true up, allows employees to receive employer matches that they would have otherwise missed out on because of 401(k) front-loading or because they spread their 401(k) contributions out unevenly throughout the year-explanation via Google)

3. Putting in too much? If your employer is unable to match your contributions, you may be missing out on funds that should be coming to you but won’t.

4. Check the plan documents and know  what the plan rules are and think of them as the rulebook for your 401(k)

5. Fine Tuning your contribution levels

6. Research other, savings options for your retirement such as a Roth IRA or a specially designed life insurance contract...

7. Know what requirements, penalties, and fees are applicable on RMDs (required minimum distributions)

To hear all of the highly informative information David has for you about rebooting your retirement, listen to the entire episode today.

Many of the notions you may have about retirement, could get you into serious financial trouble. Are you prepared if taxes go up? How much will it cost you to pull money from your 401k or IRA? Does your current strategy align with your risk tolerance?

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about recurring myths about retirement. Throughout the hour, David demystifies each misnomer and expands upon how you can prepare for many of the common pitfalls in retirement.

  1. Claiming SS as soon as possible is the way to go: Many soon to be retirees are under the impression that Social Security is prime for the taking as soon as they hit retirement age. That assumption can be detrimental to your retirement plan. Setting up a retirement plan with a retirement specialist is your best bet.
  2. Social Security Administration will assist you in collecting: The findings of a recent Government Accountability Office report concluded that the agency is consistently giving either bad or false information to retirees on the complicated subject of collecting their benefits. See Related Article: How Social Security Misleads About Claiming Benefits
  3. The market will stay or go up forever: When the market is good...everything is oh so good. But as history shows just as all things go up...they also come back down. Nobody could have predicted the damage that was done in the stock market back in 2008. If a fall like that happened again, would your retirement accounts be protected?
  4. Medicare will cover your healthcare costs: Healthcare seems so uncertain right now and many retirees are assuming that Medicare is free and that it will cover it all after retirement. There is also the assumption that Medicare will cover costly long-term care. Unfortunately that just isn’t so.
  5. Your investments will steadily create income, for you, after retirement: Unless you plan carefully and dutifully protect your assets, they may not be there for you to depend on.
  6. You shouldn't own any permanent life insurance: Many of us assume we don’t need permanent life insurance. Instead they opt for term and “plan” on investing the difference. The reality is, most don’t and most don’t realize the flexibility and value of permanent life insurance.

If any one of these critical issues were placed before you, would you be prepared? David Lukas Financial specializes in strategies designed to help you prepare for uncertainty in retirement. Everyday retirees are making assumptions that are or could be costing them thousands of dollars in unnecessary fees and market losses. In fact, too many retirees assume entirely too much when it comes to their retirement savings and accounts. If there were guaranteed ways to save on those costs, when would you want to know about it? Right now? If so, then you’re in luck because the assumptions stop today!

This week on The David Lukas Show, our host David discusses the top five assumptions that people make in retirement that could be costing them hundreds to thousands of dollars.

The top five detrimental assumptions that retirees/ future retirees make are:

  1. Assuming your broker takes your specific risk tolerance into consideration
  2. Taking Social Security at the wrong time...not taking survivor benefits into consideration.
  3. Assuming that your health will falter and you won’t live long
  4. Assuming that your holdings (401k, Roth IRA, IRA, Mutual funds…) are outperforming or at least meeting benchmark standards.
  5. Not diversifying your portfolio.

Social Security has steadily become more complicated since its inception. Too many soon-to-be retirees have no idea what’s in store for them, when it comes to collecting on Social Security. And, how if things weren’t set up correctly, come tax time, they may end up owing a lot more than they’d planned for.

This week on the DL Show, David speaks candidly on what you need to know about the changes that have been made to Social Security for 2017 and the taxation that those distributions may or may be subject to in the future.

Throughout the hour, David discusses:

  • How important it is to coordinate all of your current/future assets within your retirement.
  • The practice of spending retirement assets down to avoid extra taxation.
  • How SS is taxed differently—people may have to pay federal income taxes if they have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported to the IRS) along with his/her benefits.
  • How single/married SS income is taxed differently.

To hear the insight David has to share on Social Security, listen to the entire show today! Do you have Social Security or retirement questions? If so, call or write in to David Lukas Financial, and possibly get your question(s) answered on the air!

Can you predict the future? No? Don’t feel bad, most of us can’t. But there is something you can do that is a sure thing when it comes to safeguarding your hard earned retirement funds. Curious yet?

This week on the David Lukas show, David talks about the advantages and disadvantages of converting your 401k or IRA into a Roth IRA. Throughout the hour David explains how some experts believe it’s a no brainer. Not only could you save thousands of dollars in taxes but A ROTH IRA could also offer many other significant advantages that you don’t get from your current IRA or 401K.

The main question is: To convert or not to convert to a Roth IRA?

Perks to a Roth IRA:

  • Tax free income in retirement
  • No required distributions (in fact you NEVER have to withdraw, leaving a tax free inheritance to beneficiaries).
  • Potential minimization or elimination of taxation of Social Security Benefits

Tune into to hear David talk about Roth IRA conversions as a part of a pro active tax-strategy in retirement. Listen to the entire episode today!

INFORMATION STATION:

What Is A Roth IRA?

A Roth IRA is a special retirement account where you pay taxes on money going into your account and then all future withdrawals are tax free.

Like beauty, the benefit of a Roth IRA is in the eye of the beholder and it all depends on the beholder’s tax bracket--both now and when he or she retires. Although there is no up-front tax deduction for Roth IRA contributions as there is with a traditional IRA, Roth distributions are tax-free when you follow the rules. And because every penny you stash in a Roth IRA is your money—not a tax-subsidized gift from Uncle Sam—you can tap your contributions (but not your earnings) any time tax-free and penalty-free.

Roth IRAs make the most sense if you expect your tax rate to be higher during retirement than your current rate. That makes Roth IRAs ideal savings vehicles for young, lower-income workers who won’t miss the upfront tax deduction and who will benefit from decades of tax-free, compounded growth. Roth IRAs also appeal to anyone who wants to minimize their tax bite in retirement as well as older, wealthier taxpayers who want to leave assets to their heirs tax-free.

You can contribute to a Roth IRA at any age as long as you have earned income from a job. (Info via rothira.com)

Some people if they make too much income may not be able to contribute to a ROTH. This is where a ROTH conversion can be very beneficial as there is no income limit to convert to a ROTH.
