The David Lukas Show

A new year is upon us and now is the best time to get in there and be active in planning your life—after work. Are you getting the whole story? Do you know the details of your retirement? Chances are, you don’t.

Deeper conversations with your Financial Advisor (FA) could be the difference between life after retirement and work after retirement. So what types of conversations should you be having? First, does he/she have you set up so that you gain the ability to generate income after retirement? Do you, the client, know when is the best time to claim Social Security benefits? Has your FA educated you on how to minimize taxes or how to withdraw from an IRA without getting hit with big fees. Do you know how often you will or should meet with your FA and what you’ll talk about when you do?

This week on the David Lukas show, David wants to know what you know about your retirement. He’s interested in talking about what your Financial Advisor knows about you and your goals in retirement. Because, with all of these important questions surrounding your investments, it’s so important to have an advisor that takes the time to understand your “personal” goals. David talks in depth about the importance of working with a Fiduciary to get the results you want.

Five things you should expect to happen when meeting with your FA:

  • A discussion about the risk involved in all investment through various market cycles.
  • An education in your investments, in simple easy to understand terms.
  • A review of your retirements current status and explanation therein.
  • That your retirement plan should be a comprehensive game plan. Not just a list of holdings
  • An expectation of how often you will be meeting to review your situation.

To hear all of the important things said in this episode, listen today!

If you knew that there were certain safe holds to secure your financial future and ensure that you could retire with less stress, would you take them? Would you choose a worry-full future or The WorryFree Retirement®?

This week on the David Lukas Show, our host talks about what risks may be involved with your “basic” 401k retirement plan. Because there’s nothing worse than hoping for the best and receiving the worst. One area that can have a significant impact is to be proactive in planning your retirement by ensuring you aren’t taking unnecessary risk, especially if you are invested outside of your risk tolerance . Throughout the hour David mentions and expands upon other risk including:

  • The risk of not saving enough
  • The risk of skyrocketing health care prices
  • The risk of not being diversified in your investments
  • The risk of continued low interest rates
  • Unnecessary Fees that cripple your savings
  • The risk of having no plan for retirement
  • The risk of future tax increases.
  • How an annuity might be good for you

So what comes of blind 401k planning? A Hope and Prayer Portfolio. What the heck is that, you ask? Well, a H&P Portfolio is an investment portfolio filled with both high fees and high risk investments. Ergo, the holder places all hope that his/her investments are in their best interest and he/she is praying that their portfolio performs well. Reality Check: more times than not, this strategy doesn’t pay off for the investors—it is common for people to take way more risk than they want.

Is following the herd what’s best for you? Do you wake up at night worrying about the hits your 401k may be taking with the Market?

This week on the David Lukas Show, our host asks his listeners, “what is your 401k doing for you?” Because when it comes to retirement, most Americans have done little more than the basics. In fact, millions have contributed, monthly, to their 401k, (or as David affectionately calls a tax-postponement plan.)

Throughout the hour, David talks about what’s waiting for you when you’re ready or need to collect on your 401k and explains all the different actions needed to minimize taxes and avoid fees and penalties. David talks about how tax-diversification can be the key to retiring WorryFree®.

Just as someone shouldn’t put all of their hopes into one dream, a retiree shouldn’t put all of his or her money into one product. Penalties, fees, RMDs (required minimum distributions) and the possibility of having to pay within a higher tax bracket are just a few of the MANY reasons why every retiree and future retiree needs a solid game plan for their retirement.

So if 401k’s aren’t the best option for you in retirement, then what are your options? Here a just a few discussed in today’s show:

  • Roth IRA
  • An annuity
  • Other tax-advantaged alternative assets classes that are often overlooked.

To hear all of David’s helpful advice listen to the entire episode today!

According to a recent study, more than half of Americans age 55 and older don’t have a plan when it comes to money after retirement. That’s right, more than half! But guess what? You don’t have to be one of them!

This week, on the David Lukas Show, our host David talks about what steps are crucial to planning a WorryFree® Retirement. Throughout the hour David names and expands upon...

The Seven Critical Steps to Retirement:

  1. Sign up for Medicare – Eligible at 65 and if you are already signed up to receive SS, then you will already be signed up for Medicare. *Don’t forget about PART B- Covers outpatient care. For this there is a short (basically 7 month) window to sign up without gaining a hefty penalty. Working with a Medicare specialist is crucial.
  2. Work with a Professional Retirement Income Planner – It is so important to work with someone who understands retirement income planning. In fact, it can be the difference between work after retirement and a WorryFree® retirement. A Professional Retirement Income Planner can also help you implement a proactive withdrawal strategy when it’s time to start spending your hard earned money.
  3. The Tax Tumor hidden in your 401k – Come retirement, you’ll need the funds that you’ve saved. The lean that the government has put on your 401k has a nasty little surprise that you may not even know is there. The dreaded Tax Tumor. Are you prepared for how much in taxes you will/may be paying on the amount your 401k adds to your income?
  4. Social Security – When your are eligible and what you agree to take is important to planning your retirement.
  5. A Budget – Planning a budget and keeping with it.
  6. Consider an Annuity – Annuities may not be for everyone, but an annuity may just be perfect for you and your portfolio.
  7. Minimize Risk – taking more risk than you feel comfortable with near retirement can have a negative impact. Make sure you know who much risk you are actually taking.

Every year thousands of retirees get caught in the pitfall that is collecting Social Security. What many people don’t know is that without knowing how to set it up correctly or when you should have all of your preparations finalized you could be setting yourself up for disaster.

On this episode of the David Lukas Show, our informative host talks about all the important things YOU NEED TO KNOW about Social Security. Throughout the hour he educates his faithful listeners on the many common mistakes retirees make and what you can do to avoid them.

So what are the pitfalls of Social Security you ask:

  • Spousal benefit - Some states don’t recognize certain marriages therefore they can’t use the spousal benefit
  • Survivor and death benefit - If you remarry before the age of 60—50 if you’re disabled—you can no longer receive survivor benefits based on your deceased spouse’s work record. The survivor benefit is reduced if you collect before your own full retirement age
  • File and suspend - Doesn’t help single people
  • Delayed claiming - If you die before you collect benefits, you and your spouse will miss out on that income
  • Lump-sum payment - Once you get the lump sum, your future monthly retirement benefit is reduced to reflect the amount you already received.
  • Spousal benefit in divorce - You can claim the spousal benefit if you’ve been married for 10 years or more. But if you remarry, you can not collect the spousal benefit from your ex’s work record. Therefore, your spousal benefit will be reduced if you claim earlier than your full retirement age.
  • Benefits while working - If you claim retirement benefits before full retirement age and continue to work, Social Security will withhold a set amount of your monthly payout above a certain annual income. In 2015 it will withhold $1 for every $2 earned over $15,720. Special rules apply for the specific year in which you reach full retirement age.)

This week on the David Lukas Show, David addresses his listeners with some very important questions concerning their retirement funds and what retiree’s expectations should be when it comes to retiring WorryFree®.

For the first part of the hour, David talks about how all the financial uncertainties in life can directly affect retirement and what his company, David Lukas Financial, can do to protect you.

During the second half of the show, David discusses the web article 27 Ugly Truths About Retirement, By Alaina Tweddale, —find it here — and what they really mean.

Blurb:

Retirement isn’t all sailboats and golf courses. At least, that’s not what the one in four Americans who fear outliving their income think. That’s according to a recent survey by the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council, which also found that nearly one in five Americans don’t have a clue about how much they’ve saved for retirement.

Still, for those worried about retirement, forewarned is forearmed, as the saying goes. We’ve compiled 27 ugly truths about retirement, so you’ll know how to best prepare for each.

Scripture mentioned in today’s show:

Romans 13:1
Proverbs 8:5
Acts 13:31
Daniel 4:17

David’s message for his listeners: Fear not, no matter what. God is in control. And don’t give in to anxiety for this earth is NOT our home.

What are the pros and cons of a 401k rollover for business start-ups? (ROBS Plan- Roll Over For Business Startup) Or should I just straight withdraw the money that I need from my 401k? The plan is to enter the trucking business and my startup costs are budgeted around 50-70k. Do you know of any Arkansas firms that have any experience with this strategy?

Understanding investments, bonds, and annuities isn’t easy. In fact, because all the details surrounding retirement are complicated, many soon to be retirees place too much faith in the the person/firm that’s making crucial decisions for your future.

So what comes of that type of backseat planning? A Hope and Prayer Portfolio. What the heck is that, you ask? Well, a H&P Portfolio is an investment portfolio filled with both high fees and high risk investments. Ergo, the holder places all hope that his/her FA is investing in their best interest and he/she is praying that their portfolio performs well. Reality Check: more times than not, this strategy doesn’t pay off for the investors—instead performing well for the FA/firm.

This week on the David Lukas Show, your host David Lukas first talks about the doctorate of vocation and how important it is that we follow God’s plan for us in our careers. (For more information, check out this amazing article found on Theology Of Work.

Also, tied to the idea of vocation, David talks about his continued journey in adding VALUE to his current and future clients in retirement. Below are just a few of the important questions presented and answered throughout the hour.

  • Do you know what you’re paying for?
  • Do you know WHY you have the funds that you have?
  • Do you know how much you are paying (fees, commissions)?
  • Do you know the amount of risk your investments are taking?

Closing the show, David plays a recorded clip from Jack Bogle (Founder of Vanguard).

One of the biggest investment expenses you will face in retirement is taxes. Planning for taxes can impact your long-term return and increase your likelihood of reaching retirement and financial independence.

This week on the DL Show, our host David Lukas takes the hour to discuss how important tax diversification is and the looming detriment of your retirement accounts NOT being diversified.

Important topics discussed in today’s show:

  • What is tax diversification
  • How do I diversify my portfolio
  • Tax exempt options/holdings
  • Important tax rate and deduction information
  • Account withdrawal strategies
  • What lost opportunity cost may be costing you

DID YOU KNOW…

if you have all or most of your money tied up into a 401k waiting to be taxed, after retirement, (or any other government sanctioned— or as David affectionately calls it, tax postponement — retirement plan) all of those funds WILL be subject to taxation at unknown amount? The thinking goes that you will always be in a lower tax-bracket in retirement. However, we don’t know what the tax rates will be in the future. Take a look at USDebtClock.org. Where do you think taxes are headed? Consider this, the government is borrowing over $40,000 per second more than they take in tax revenues and approaching 20 trillion in debt (Not including unfunded liabilities). Take a look at the History of tax rates in the U.S. Below. As you can see, they are historically low right now.

“As we peer into society's future, we -- you and I, and our government -- must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.”

― Dwight D. Eisenhower

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about all the caveats the government has made concerning your Required Minimum Distribution Amounts in retirement and what you need to know about the many rules that apply.

Throughout the hour, David gets into the specifics needed to properly prepare for when retirees start taking distributions from their IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and/or SEP IRA. The mistakes are too costly not to plan properly.

Did you know that the IRS deems account holders ultimately responsible for calculating their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) amounts on their retirement funds—not the account’s custodian? Do you know the IRS’s rules on Required Distribution Amounts (RDAs)?

According to irs.gov...

“You cannot keep retirement funds in your account indefinitely. You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 70½. Roth IRAs do not require withdrawals until after the death of the owner.

  • Your required minimum distribution is the minimum amount you must withdraw from your account each year.
  • You can withdraw more than the minimum required amount. Your withdrawals will be included in your taxable income except for any part that was taxed before (your basis) or that can be received tax-free (such as qualified distributions from designated Roth accounts).”

This week, on the DL Show, our host David Lukas chats with his mentor and partner, in the WorryFree Retirement®, Tony Walker about the final most important player in retirement: Your Retirement Planner.

Throughout the hour, David and Tony discuss many of the options available and appealing to Savers in preparing for retirement. Together, they explain and expand upon the concept of planning a retirement that not only makes sense but also a retirement that works for you. Because just as many FAs dislike and refuse to recommend annuities for their clients, equally as many retirement specialists suggest annuities as a fail-safe way to protect and set aside some, of an investor’s assets specifically for retirement.

Also included, David and Tony discuss and remind DL Show listeners that annuities are designed, and truly best suited, for savers planning and preparing for their second half of life.

If you are interested in a WorryFree Retirement® and hearing more about what you need to know about the 5 Players in Retirement, or what you need to know about an annuity you’re interested in or currently own, listen to the entire show today!

What would happen to you and/or your family if the financial supports of present—the government, employers, banks, and Wall Street—were, are no longer available to you? Would you still be able to retire WorryFree® or would you have to return to the work force just to make ends meet?

Throughout the hour David explains how insurance companies and the products they provide should definitely be one of the cornerstones of every solid retirement plan. Why? Because none of other players in retirement offer or have the ability to provide guaranteed monthly income. Why is that, you ask? Because life insurance/annuities take longevity risk (the risk of outliving your money) out of the equation and provide what Savers are looking for. Savers want predictability and certainty.

Important topics discussed:

  • Why you need an annuity in your retirement plan
  • How insurance and annuities keep your money safe
  • Insurance policies offer liquidity and access to your money if/when you need it without penalty
  • There is no longevity risk with annuities as with other risky investments

“It is well that the people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning”

~Henry Ford

For this most recent installment of the David Lukas Show, David continues with the Who’s Supporting You/ Who Can You Trust Series by talking about the fourth player in retirement: your bank.

Just how important of a player is your bank? Very. In fact, knowing how the banking system works is critical to responsibly planning your retirement and safeguarding your hard earned assets.

Throughout the hour David explains how banks really “hold” your money in trust. In other words, because banks are highly leveraged, they are able to loan out 90% of an account holder’s money. That means when you deposit $10,000 into your bank account, the bank can legally loan out $9,000 of YOUR MONEY! That deposit is not held in trust, as it should be.

Important topics discussed:

  • How banks work within the monetary system
  • Why you need to understand how our monetary system works and how the banks control it
  • Banks can and have failed
  • The current state of the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) administered by the FDIC.
  • Supporting retirement like grandad did with his interest earnings at the bank just isn’t possible in today’s low interest rate environment.

“Hey, if I were starting over from scratch today with what we know, I’d blow up the existing structure and start over. What I’m talking about isn’t 401(k). I’m talking about the way investing is done.”

— Ted Benna, Father of the 401k

This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about another important player in retirement, Wall Street and it’s primary tool for capturing your savings, the 401k. For most people saving in their 401k, they are limited to mutual funds that were designed and created by Wall Street.

Since the early 1980s, Americans have been sold on why relinquishing control over their money, investing in 401ks, and taking risks in the stock market are essential for retirement. Essentially, the American worker was told: “You are now the owner of your own investment fund. But we are not responsible for whether it will be enough to provide a decent pension. That depends on you.” Over time, Defined Contribution plans that are stock market dependent overwhelmingly replaced plans in which companies promise fixed, reliable, benefits to retired employees

Tying the fate of the American family to the level of the Dow Jones represented a radical transformation of the American pension System. Wall Street was all too happy to fill this void. How is Wall Street benefiting off of your hard earned retirement funds? Tune in to find out…..

Important topics discussed:

  • What a 401k actually is
  • When, why, and how the 401k came to be
  • Why and how 401ks can be detrimental to retirement
  • How the WorryFree Retirement® knows how to provide security 401ks can’t

Many soon-to-be retirees don’t know what’s in store for them when it comes to collecting Social Security after retirement. And, how if things weren’t set up correctly, come tax time, they may end up owing a lot more than they’d planned for.

This week on the DL Show, David speaks candidly on what you need to know about Social Security and the taxation that those distributions are and can be subject to in the future.

During the first half hour, David explains the origin of Social Security—basically, the government created way of getting the old workers out to make room for the new—and the basics of how the government has managed to reach into your pocket yet again by taxing your Social Security as income. (Yes folks, that means you potentially could be paying taxes on money you’ve already paid taxes on!)

In the last half, David discusses:

  • The practice of spending retirement assets down to avoid extra taxation.
  • How SS is taxed differently—people may have to pay federal income taxes if they have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported to the IRS) along with his/her benefits.
  • How important it is to coordinate all of your current/future assets within your retirement.
  • How single/married SS income is taxed differently.

  4. Reinvesting the dividends on your investments always makes sense

...and then lists what your REAL options are when you ask, “what are my options when it comes to my 401k plan. David’s suggestions are:

  1. Coordinate it with your other benefits - to minimize unnecessary taxation
  2. Stretch it - to try to minimize the taxes and extend said IRA for generations to come.
  3. Defer it -put off the inevitable
  4. Convert it - into a Roth IRA
  5. Insure it - essentially making the IRA tax free by directly dealing with the infamous tax tumor
  6. Gift it
  7. Spend it

"Our personalities are made up of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual components. They're molded and colored and given intricacies by our upbringing, our experiences, our fears, our passions, and our observations of the world. What I am calling your “Financial Personality” is just one aspect of who you are."

– Tony Walker, author & creator of  The 3 Personalities of Money®

On this installment of the David Lukas Show, David first addresses the three types of financial personalities and how important it is to know what yours is and why. David also explains how your personality influences how you feel and deal with your money.

So what, specifically, are The 3 Personalities Of Money® you ask?

  • Speculator- A speculator is a trader who approaches the financial markets intending to make a money by buying low and selling high (or higher), not necessarily in that order. The speculator is distinguished from the investor, who approaches the financial markets with the intention of making a return on his capital.
  • Investor- An investor allocates capital expecting a positive future financial return. Investors approach the financial markets with the expectations of making a return on his capital.
  • Saver- a person who regularly saves money through a recognized scheme. They’re interested in an object, action, or process that prevents their financial resources from being used up or expended.

Do you know what your financial personality is? If you’re a saver, you’ve got to understand your personality before you can appropriately make decisions concerning your retirement. Not sure where you stand? Take the test NOW.

Biblical theme of today’s show: With faith in God, the future is bright.

Ecclesiastes (NIV) 8:7, Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?

Luke (NIV) 17:24, For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.

When The Market is dipping and diving week on end, it’s hard to just sit back and “hang in there.” Especially when we’ve all been pigeonholed into being an investor or a speculator.

Unfortunately for Wall Street, we’re not all Investors and Speculators. In fact, many of us are Savers looking to safeguard our retirement funds—not gamble them away or put them into something that is unpredictable or uncertain.

This week on the DL Show, David talks about how annuities should work for and benefit Savers. Also, David discusses the steps that Savers can take to buy annuities safely.

Key Items discussed:

  • Beware the unscrupulous salesman
  • The security Fixed Indexed Annuities provides

Scripture of the Day: Bible Verse(s) discussed (NIV): Proverbs 8-11

What the bible has to say about wisdom: Instruction is key in gaining knowledge and later attaining wisdom.

Are you struggling just to understand things? Are you confused and acting on impulse when people are trying to sell you things? If you find yourself stuck in these situations or decisions, look to God.

With so many “professional” opinions out there, concerning finance, sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between valuable information and propaganda.

And before HUGE decisions are made there are many important factors to consider—whether you’re planning on taking a lump sum payout, a monthly income, or a roll-over in relation to your pension. This week, on the DL Show, our host David explains what future retirees need to know about their pensions, if they have one, before retiring. Topics discussed in today’s show:

  • Defined Benefit Plan. This plan, otherwise known as the pension, is guaranteed by the employer for the policyholder to receive a definite amount of money at retirement. Guaranteed.
  • Defined Contribution Plan. This plan, otherwise known as the 401k, is a money match or percentage contribution to a profit sharing pool where you, the employee, takes all the risk. The final amount of money received depends on how the investment performs in the stock market. Unguaranteed.
  • The Tax Tumor. The tax tumor is what’s owed in the future when cashing in on your 401k. (Insider info: nobody knows what the tax percentage will be in the future. But one thing’s for sure. It will be higher.)

David also addresses a listener's question:

I put 10% into my 401k plan. The company matches 6% and I was wondering...Is it advisable to keep putting that much in my 401k plan or should I think about something else with my money?

To hear the insight David has to give, listen to the entire show today! Do you have pension, 401k, or retirement questions? If so, call or write in to David Lukas Financial, and possibly get your question(s) answered on the air!

Bible related theme discussed today: Contentment — to be satisfied. How do we remain satisfied and content in life? By remembering that God gives us the good and the bad. Without the bad, we can never fully appreciate the good.

"I’ve created a monster."  – Ted Benna, the creator of the 401k.

When it comes to basic retirement planning, most of America’s been drinking the Koolaid. And for years, or for some, entire career spans, millions have been contributing, monthly, to one of the largest government tax-postponement plans in existence—the tax deferment plan otherwise known as the 401k.

On this episode of the DL Show, David talks about what’s waiting for you when you’re ready or need to collect on your 401k. Throughout the hour David explains all the different actions needed to minimize taxes and avoid fees and penalties and explains expands upon how tax-diversification can be the key to retirement success. Because just as someone shouldn’t put all of their hopes into one dream, a retiree shouldn't’ put all of his or her money into one product.

Penalties, fees, RMDs (required minimum distributions) and the possibility of having to pay in a higher tax bracket are just a few of the MANY reasons why every retiree and future retiree needs a solid game plan for their retirement.

So if 401k’s aren’t the best option for me in retirement, than what are my options? Here a just a few of the options discussed in today’s show:

  • Roth IRA
  • An annuity
  • Other tax-advantaged alternative assets classes that are often overlooked.

Biblical theme of today’s show: Things that are hidden and not seen.

Bible verse(s) featured in today’s show: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 New International Version (NIV)
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Of course it is human to fear and worry about what we don’t understand. Lucky are the listeners of the David Lukas Show, in that he works hard to educate and help Savers Worry Less About Money®.

This week, on the DL Show, David talks about how Wall Street banks on the heavy dose of fear fed to Savers. Promoting the ear of being taken advantage of and fear of the unknown is how Wall Street has duped Savers into thinking that moving their fee-laden mutual funds—the funds that they, the Financial Advisors, are making a pretty penny on—into annuities is a bad move because of SURRENDER CHARGES!

Throughout the hour, David explains why and how Savers have less reason to fear the sometimes unpredictably fickle Market when they choose to participate in The WorryFree Retirement®.

Listener’s question addressed in today’s show:

Hey David. I have some concerns because I’ve had some health issues in the past. I didn’t work for about 4 years and because I was a single mom for eight years and couldn’t put any money away in my 401k. Now, I feel like I’m behind in where I should be and I’m concerned about when I can retire. How do I get to the point where I can retire comfortably? We would like to take the money that we do have and grow it as much as possible without taking too much risk.

Essentially, what this listener is saying is that she needs a game plan. To hear what comments and suggestions David has to give about developing a strategic retirement game plan, listen to the entire episode today.

Because Americans, en masse, participate in Qualified Plans without having all the details of how they actually work, many soon-to-be retirees are finding that their 401ks are falling short in means of future comfort.

This week, our host David Lukas dives into the topic of 401ks and what you, as an investor in your future, need to know before retirement. Throughout the hour, David explains and expands on the importance of understanding the negative implications of future taxation as well as the effect that hidden fees can and will have on your hard earned retirement funds. Important financial questions that David addresses this week:

  1. What types of fees am I playing on my 401k?
  2. How much of my 401k do I actually get to keep?
  3. What are the external costs of my 401k?
  4. How much in taxes do I pay if I want to cash in my 401k before I retire?
  5. What are the differences between the internal, external, and eternal rates of return?

“You finance everything in life you buy. You either pay interest, or you give up the ability to earn interest on that money you would have earned had you not given it to someone else.”   —David Lukas

Do you have a plan in place to insure that your income will last as long as you live? Insider tip: The only place you can get that type of guarantee is with an insurance company through an annuity. Lord knows, retirement planning would be a lot easier if we all knew how long we were going to live. Unfortunately, we don’t have that type information given to us. Our fate is out of our hands– our financial futures don’t have to be. On this week’s installment of the David Lukas Show, David talks about the differences between life insurance and annuities and why, in an ideal world, Savers would have both of the product in their retirement plans. Throughout the hour, David talks about the benefits of safeguarding your hard earned retirement funds with products like life insurance and annuities. As he explains what annuities actually are and how they work, David also discusses how every financial decision we make comes with an internal cost an external cost and finally an eternal cost. David also explains how important it is that Savers know what could potentially be costing them a WorryFree Retirement®. Also mentioned are the four financial institutions that determine what your costs are:

  1. The government
  2. Wall Street
  3. Banks
  4. Insurance companies

  • Internal cost — the internal workings, we have to work hard internally and while we're young and fit to do that, we're supposed to work hard and save.
  • External cost — God has has called us to work and save just as he has called at some point in our life for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
  • Eternal costs — the eternal blessing. God wants us to look back one day when we can't work so hard, when the kids are grown, or when the nursing homes are knocking at our doors and look back and realize that this stage is all about rest.

Have you ever Googled the word annuity? If you haven’t, maybe you should. Much to the financial industry’s dismay, annuities have become popular products that help Savers use, enjoy and protect their hard earned money.

This week, on the David Lukas Show, David focuses on annuities and why/how they have recently become the sweethearts of the insurance business.

David first chats about something that happened back in 2014—an estimated 50 billion dollars moved from managed accounts into products called hybrid annuities (fixed indexed annuities). Yes folks. That’s 50. Billion. Dollars.

So why did all that money move from Wall Street to insured contractual agreements? Security. That’s when many “investors” finally realized that they were actually Savers more interested in the return of their money other than the rate of return on their money.

In the second half of the show, David names and explains what the four types of annuities are:

  • Fixed
  • Variable
  • Immediate
  • Fixed-Index (Hybrid)

...and how each one differs from the other.

Listeners’ questions addressed during the show:

Hi David. I have an annuity currently making 3% interest. Can I get a better rate somewhere else?   —Ricky in Little Rock, AR.

What is an indexed annuity, and is it better than a fixed rate annuity? What if interest rates go up, what about bond rates?   —Charles in Austin AR.

To hear the valuable advice David has to give Ricky and Charles, listen to the entire episode today.

Caveat Emptor is an old Latin warning that notifies a buyer that the goods he or she is buying are “as is,” or subject to any, or all, defects. Armed with this knowledge, how are we as Savers to know what types of goods (financial products) are good for our portfolios and which types of goods could be devastating?

On todays episode of the DL Show, our host David Lukas talks about how important it is that both current and future retirees know and understand on the “rules of the game”—the retirement game, that is.

Topics discussed in this week’s’ episode:

  • Don’t focus on a product, focus on the process
  • Knowing where different products fit into a well rounded retirement plan
  • Understanding Annuity surrender fees and contractual half-truths
  • Unilateral contracts (definition and explanation) and the benefits therein

Q&A with DL Show listeners:

I’m thinking of leaving my job and have a 401k. What are the penalties for just taking the money, and if there are any kind of hardship provision to do so?

— Karen, from Cabot AR.

In response, David explains how age, taxes, and penalties can all come into play when considering a draw from a current 401k.

I’m 62 and already retired. I’d like to know how I can use the IRA to invest in another property to live in without the government taking taxes?

— Danny, from Little Rock, AR.

In response to Danny’s question, David talks about how putting realestate into an IRA isn’t always the best option when it comes to specific property types and tax advantages.
